After Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old suspected of shooting and killing nine people at the Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina, was captured on Thursday, the victims of the crime were identified. Earlier, the only identified victim was State Senator and Reverend Clementa C. Pinckney. Now, we know that a recent college graduation is among the victims.

The victims include Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders, 26 and the recent graduate of Sanders University; Sharonda Singleton, 45; Myra Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie Jackson, 87; Reverend Daniel Simmons, Sr., 74; and DePayne Doctor, 49. Hurd was a served in Charleston County’s library system for over 30 years. Doctor worked in enrollment counseling at Southern Wesleyan University.

Charleston County’s Coroner, Rae Wooten, claimed that Roof asked to join the Bible study in the church. The group accepted him without knowing he would soon turn to violence. Sources approximate Roof was in the church for about an hour before his behavior turned deadly.

Now, the FBI believes that no more lives are in danger. They think Roof acted alone, and now that he’s in custody, the people of Charleston and its surrounding areas are safe from him.

We are keeping the victims’ families and the entire Charleston community in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

Unforgivable act of hate…will South Carolina now realize the need to enact a hate crime law? They must; if only to establish solidarity within the state that such acts of violence will never be tolerated.
