At last years Denver Comic-Con, Wil Wheaton, 41, took part in a panel where he answered questions from the audience. One little girl stood up to ask Wheaton if he had ever been called a nerd, and if so, how he dealt with that. Wheaton’s response to her question was so touching and heartfelt.
“When I was a little boy I was called a nerd all the time because I didn’t like sports, I loved to read, I liked math and science, and I thought school was really cool,” Wheaton said. “It hurt a lot, because it’s never okay when a person makes fun of you for something that you didn’t choose. We didn’t choose to be nerds. We can’t help it that we like these things, and we shouldn’t apologize for liking these things.”
The crowd applauded after he said, “It absolutely gets better as you get older.”
