Asabi Barner visited Black Ink in Harlem last year to replace a unicorn and horseshoe tattoo that she got when she was 18.
The tattoo parlor is best known for its VH1 reality show, and its now-significant following, even boasting some celebrity customers.
Barner was drawn to them because of their claimed expertise in tattooing African American skin, but she has suffered some scary side effects.
All was well until the morning after she received the chest-piece, when the area around her left breast began oozing pus. A tattoo artist near her home in South Carolina told her that the first artist “overworked” her skin to bring out the white color for her tattoo.
Barner is now forced to use an ice pack on the area every day, which has keloids and constantly burns and itches.
She considered surgery, but a plastic surgeon told her that would make the scar even worse.
“In the intimate moments it creates a problem because you don’t have that confidence. I wasn’t overly confident before, but I felt good about myself. Felt good about my body, but it just changes you,” she told PIX11 News.
Barner is suing Black Ink for negligence.
The parlor couldn’t be reached for comment.
