Polly McCourt had already gone into labor by the time she stepped out of her apartment in Manhattan to hail a cab to a hospital, but the baby couldn’t wait and she wound up giving birth in the middle of a sidewalk on Monday. Her doorman, Anton Rudovic, was helping her to the street to hail a cab, and would you believe that when they made it to the corner of the street, another woman had jumped in front of her and stole her ride?
“And I went ‘that’s my cab, I want that cab!,” McCourt said.
The baby’s head was already crowning, so she gave up trying to get to Lenox Hill Hospital, which was nearby. She instead sat down on the sidewalk and gave birth right there. In under five minutes her baby arrived, and several woman offered their scarves to wrap the baby. One woman, thought to be named Isabel, offered McCourt her coat to keep her warm.
Thankfully, her husband, Cian McCourt, made it in time to join her in the ambulance. His wife was seen smiling and thanking the group of people who had helped her as she was being wheeled by paramedics into the back of an ambulance. The reason why he wasn’t there earlier was because he was stuck in traffic.
The couple was so grateful to the woman who gave her the coat that they named the baby after her. Her name was meant to be Ila Polly but it was changed to Ila Isabel. They also have a six-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter.
I’m so happy that the baby and mother are healthy!
