I’m pretty sure many of you are wondering where the money you donated to ALS went. Well, I’ll have you know that you’re not the only one wondering where your money went. Almost 2.5 million people donated money to the ALS Association and they’re curious as well.

In total, 2.5 million people, including you, donated about $115 million to the ALS Association. The organization indicated that not only did the ice bucket challenge bring awareness to ALS, it also was the second largest episode of giving besides to that of a disaster or emergency.

The ALS Association says that 40% of the Ice bucket money, which is $47.1 million was spent or budgeted towards different objectives. But the ALS Association plans on using all of the $115 million towards five main spending buckets, which are listed as the following:

Bucket #1: $77 million for research

This will go towards trying to find a cure or treatment for ALS. Right now there isn’t a cure, but there is one drug that extends survival for a period of time.

Bucket #2: $23 million for patient and community services

Treatment centers will be established with this money, providing patients with different services and needs.

Bucket #3: $10 million for public and professional education

Treatment centers will be established with this money, providing patients with different services and needs.

Bucket #4: $3 million for fundraising

The organization wants to maintain data analysis and create ways to maintain the support of donors they got from the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Bucket #5: $2 million for external processing fees

This will pay for all the website fees that were accumulated from the massive amount of people that visited the website. And will pay for running credit and debit card donations.

“It takes about a billion dollars to make a new therapy,” said Dr. Steven Finkbeiner of the Neurocollaborative.

And with that being said, the organization wants to thank you all for donating and hopes for more donations to be made this summer.
