Zoe Saldana has received a lot of backlash concerning her new role as legendary jazz soul singer Nina Simone in the new biopic ‘Nina’. What sparked the backlash was Zoe changing her skin color to a darker shade, which to most translated as a form of black-face. One would wonder why she even chose this role given that Nina was not only dark skinned, but she was also a curvy full figured woman, a role which most think would be more suitable for actresses such a Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis or Uzo Aduba.
Nina’s Estate has gone to twitter to respond to Zoe’s new role: “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.” Zoe responded with a tweet which was a quote from Nina Simone, which read “I’ll tell you what freedom is-No fear…I mean really, no fear.”
Nina Simone’s fans are also clearly outraged by not only the darkening of Zoe’s skin, but also the prosthetic nose.
Many actors in the past have done a lot to their bodies in order to resemble the characters they were portraying. Remember Charlize Theron in the movie ‘Monster’, she was completely unrecognizable. In Zoe’s case for instance, I think the darkening of her skin is what many found insulting. Yet irrespective of what, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Zoe Saldana is a good actress.
