Musical tastes of all ages were satisfied at the BET awards last night, as a string of tributes throughout the evening revived some rhythms of old. Whether you listened to records during the Motown era, bumped old school rap in your room during the coveted 90s, or you are a youngster who grew up with your parents music, the 14th annual BET awards was certainly a show to remember.

Beginning with the anticipated Bad Boy reunion, the dynamic duo of Ma$e and Puff Daddy opened with “Feel So Good,” followed by who other than ‘the S the L the I the M.’ Yes. The once popular R&B group 112 came together to perform their most popular hit “Peaches and Cream.” Other members of the infamous record label including Jadakiss, Faith Evans, and Lil’ Kim reunited on the BET stage, all paying tribute to the late Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls.

The crowd at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles jammed out to their favorite rap songs and Twitter erupted into a reminiscing frenzy, but mostly because of the stumble and fall Diddy took in the center of the stage. However, it didn’t take much for the rapper-entrepreneur to shake it off. 20 years later, he did tell you that he won’t stop.

A performance including Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke and rising singing sensation Tori Kelly, honored singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award. Songs such as “Who’s Loving You,” “Ooo Baby, Baby,” and “The Tears of a Clown,” were belted by the soulful and sultry voices mentioned, followed by an inspiring speech with all praise given to his Lord and Savior, by Smokey himself.

To round out the tributes for the night, just four days following the sixth anniversary of her brother’s untimely death, Janet Jackson returned to the BET stage to accept the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award. The trio of Tinashe, Jason Derulo, and Ciara paid homage to the icon, dancing to some Janet classics including “All For You” and “Rhythm Nation.”

The megastar accepted her award with an angelic grace, thanking her parents who were both in the audience, along with her husband and loyal fans. They are all thrilled to know she is back, and not just to accept an award. Her Unbreakable World Tour is set to kick off this summer on Aug. 21.
