We won’t be seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger in therapy any time soon.
The 67-year-old Terminator star went on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show on Wednesday, and opened up about his failed marriage to Maria Shriver.
“It was the biggest mistake I ever made,” Schwarzenegger said about seeking marriage counseling. “That guy was so full of s**t. He said more crap and more nonsense. It was absolutely counterproductive to our future relationship…Maria talked me into it. I went, and I felt instinctively maybe I shouldn’t go because I know I screwed up. I don’t have to go through anyone to have to explain to me anything. I apologized to Maria. I apologized to the kids.”
Despite Schwarzenegger’s failed counseling experience, he says that the family has moved forward, “It has worked out really so well with the help of Maria, with the help of the kids, but not because of the shrink or some psychiatrist.”
The actor went on to explain that he is “not against” therapy, he believes people “should get help when they need it,” but in his case it was not helpful.
The two stars were married for 25 years before Shriver filed for divorce in 2011, after it was revealed that Schwarzenegger had fathered a son with the couple’s former employee, Mildred Baena, in 1997, more than 14 years prior to the divorce.
Schwarzenegger looks back on his marriage with remorse, “I had personal setbacks, but this was without any doubt the biggest setback and the biggest failure. Without any doubt. And not only failure, but you really feel like, ‘I am to blame for it. It was me that screwed up.’ And you can’t point the finger at anyone else. So yeah, I was disappointed at it, but it’s always easy to be smart in hindsight. You know, so the thing was how do you…make the best of that?”
The former California governor did try to make the best of it by focusing his energy on his children. He praised them during the interview, “My kids…I am so proud of them. I am so in love with them.”
Schwarzenegger has four children with Shriver: Katherine, 25, Christina, 23, Patrick, 21, and Christopher, 17. He is also a devoted father to his love child, Joseph Baena, who is now 17.
Still referring to Maria Shriver as his “wife” in the interview, Schwarzenegger says that the whole family has worked together to get through, what he refers to as a “complicated bump”.
“I am one of the fortunate ones that we have really great, great kids,” the actor gushed. “Including my fifth child with Mildred. He is terrific and he totally understands the situation. It all has worked our really well –It’s a very tough situation for him. It’s a very tough situation for my kids, a very tough situation for my family. It’s tough for everybody, but it has happened and now we have to kind of figure it out.”
One thing remains clear after hearing Schwarzenegger’s interview: he has remained a devoted father to all of his children and is a huge family guy.
As long as he isn’t in therapy, life seems to be great for him!
