Avril Lavigne fans has been wandering why she’s been off the radar for a while. In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Avril opens up about a disease that kept her bedridden.
Last October, Avril sought medical attention after feeling ill for months. She was diagnosed with a severe case of Lyme disease.
“I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know. I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.”
“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand,” she says. “It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.” Avril decided to tell her fans about her illness, when she received a private Twitter message asking her about her health. They were asking about me since I was MIA, so I mentioned to one fan directly that I wasn’t feeling good. The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply.”
Avril is doing much better now and is set to release new music. Her new single “Fly” will be released this month in support of the 2015 Special Olympics. “This was a wake-up call,” she added. “I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
