Groups have already begun to flock to South Carolina to protest the shooting of Walter Scott. The entire altercation was recorded on video and shows white Police Officer Michael Slager shooting 50 year Walter Scott, who is African American, eight times while Scott had his back turned and was running away. The officer has argued that he feared for his life because Scott had taken his stun gun during a traffic stop, many say this contradicts what is shown in the video, where Scott seems to be unarmed.

Immediately after the story was reported, many celebrities took to their social media accounts to express their emotions about the incident. Geraldo Rivera tweeted “No spin-video clearly shows white N.Charleston cop shooting fleeing black man 8 times in the back-If this guy’s acquitted I’ll join protest.” Janelle Monae tweeted “This brought tears to my eyes. #WalterScott reminds me of my uncle, family. Can only imagine the pain his fam feels.” Michelle Williams tweeted “Once again….. #WalterScott” and Jackee Harry tweeted “#WalterScott’s Killing Is the Sum of Every Black Nightmare About White Cops.”

Since the shooting, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey had already ordered 101 body cameras for officers recently and has now ordered 150 additional body cameras be added to police officers, so that “every officer on the street will have one.” The State, F.B.I. and Justice Department have begun to look into the incident. Meanwhile, messages continue to pour in through social media regarding the case.
