Well, what do you know…Eminem was wrong.
People haven’t “Forgot About Dre” and he’s back!
After 16 years, Dr. Dre has made a new album, and he’s released it a day early! The 50-year-old producer and rapper released Compton late Thursday night, streaming on Apple Music. The album is said to be the soundtrack of the upcoming film, Straight Outta Compton, which tells the story of rap group, N.W.A.
Dre took to his radio show, The Pharmacy With Dr. Dre, to express his views on the up and coming film.
“The heart and the emotion is there. You come to understand who we are as people, and what it took to make this sh*t happen,” Dre said. “It’s more that just the music, I think the music is the co-star in the movie, and our characters, being able to understand who we are and what it took tog et this thing done, I think people are really going to gravitate towards that and really appreciate it, and be inspired by it as well.”
Although it’s nearing two decades since Dre has relaeased music, he’s been keeping busy over the years, mentoring other rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Eminem. He also started the famous Dr. Dre Beats Electronics, which he sold to Apple for $3 billion in 2014, a sale that pushed him up as the highest-paid musician. So, the musician hasn’t been doing too bad over the years.
Compton features renowned artists like Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, Anderson Paak, King Mez, Xzibit, The Game, and many more.
Dre is not only giving Straight Outta Compton a complete soundtrack, but he plans to donate part of the proceeds from the album to an arts center in Compton that he plans to build. He announced news of these plans on his radio show, “I feel it’s the right think to do and I hope everybody appreciates the work I put into this album.”
“I’ve been really trying to do something special for Compton and just couldn’t quite figure out what it was,” Dre said. “[Compton Mayor Aja Brown] actually had this idea and she was already in the process of working on it. I said ‘Boom, this is what we should do.’”
Although the release of Compton is huge, Dre is aware that many of his fans have actually been awaiting the rumored released of his never-released album Detox. The rapper admits why it never came out.
“This is something you’re not gonna hear many artists say. The reason Detox didn’t come out was because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good,” he admitted. “I’m gonna keep it all-the-way 1,000 with you, seriously. I worked my ass off on it, I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.”
Though this is the iconic rapper’s first record in 16 years, he says it will be his “grand finale.”
“All me friends came in, old and new. I worked with a lot of new and exciting musicians, producers, singers, rappers,” he said. “And we all came together to build this thing, and it’s going to be my grand finale. The record is crazy.”
Straight Outta Compton hits theatres Aug. 14th.
