UK born singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran has done it again, ladies and gentlemen. By “it” I mean that he has produced a record that has completely blown my mind. As the best performer I’ve ever seen live and the most humble celebrity in general, we should expect nothing less than perfection from him at this point. And he does not disappoint.
Late last month Sheeran began a strange and cryptic countdown via his Twitter. We learned after BBC Radio 1 accidentally spilled that it would be the premiere of his new single that he titled, “Sing.”
Not only did he announce the title of his first single, but also the title of his newest album, “x” or “Multiply” to counter his first “+” or “Plus.” Sticking with a mathematical theme, we see. All I know is that Ed+Guitar x Loop Pedal=magic.
Stepping into the BBC Radio One studio today, he talked with radio host Zane Lowe just before playing his new song. He noted that he was, “very, very, very, very excited” about it. He said it had more of an R&B feel to it. Known for his acoustic ballads he knew that he could have put one out as his first single but wanted, instead, to take a risk.
People are, “either gonna love it or hate it, but at least they’ll be talking about it,” Sheeran told the host. It has been three years since he put out an album and I would say that the risk paid off.
Produced by Pharell, the songs starts with Ed’s classic acoustic sound backed by electrical instruments and a choir in the chorus. A bit of R&B and rap, as promised, comes out in the bridge and you can’t help but nod your head along with the beat.
I’m sure you’ll be hearing it on the radio a lot in the next few weeks to come. Request it at your local stations, listen and let us know what you think. “x” comes out June 23rd. US Tour date announcements are expected either April or May.
