Empire is FOX’s newest breakout hit, slowly but surely changing the television landscape. Before its debut season had even reached its halfway point, it was renewed for a second.
Jussie Smollett plays Jamal Lyon, the middle son of music mogul Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard). Jamal has his fair share of trials, first and foremost among them being the fact that his father refuses to accept his son being gay. His mother, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), has always favored him and is determined to prove to Lucious that Jamal may actually have more musical talent than his father does.
In a recent interview with ETOnline right before the Grammys last Sunday (Feb. 8), Smollett compared his personal style of music with his Empire character’s:
“Jamal and I are very similar in that we are both very autobiographical songwriters. These are my stories; I am a songwriter. I get to tell what I go through on a daily basis, my insecurities and triumphs. It will be awesome to flip the script and let people know about me. My music is a little bit more rock infused, more guitar driven, while Jamal’s is very piano driven.”
In addition to his prominent role on Empire, where some of his music has already been featured, Smollett is working on an album:
“I just started to record my album tonight. Over the next five months, until we start season two, that’s what I will be working on. It’s what I was doing before Empire and have worked on for so many years. It’s really what I want to delve into.”
The general soundtrack for Empire is spearheaded by music veteran Timbaland, but tonight’s (Feb. 11) episode will feature one of Smollett’s original songs:
“Four songs of mine have been chosen for this season. In the next episode, the song “I Want to Love You,” that’s my song that I wrote and produced!”
Episode 6 is going to be intense. I, for one, can’t wait!
