Fifty Shades of Grey has had, in a strange way, a Cinderella story. Ish. E.L. James began writing the series as fan fiction for Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, and then was able to turn it into her own trilogy. She’s even publishing a retelling of the story from Christian Grey’s point of view, which is due out on June 18. There was a movie adaptation this past February, and now, comedian Marlon Wayans is making a parody film called Fifty Shades of Black.
We really aren’t surprised that Wayans is behind this. His family is parody royalty. They’re the masterminds behind the Scary Movie franchise and Dance Flick. Since they’re veterans in the field of making fun of something, we have nothing but high hopes for this new movie, scheduled for release in January 2016.
Wayans talked about the upcoming parody film, which was picked up by Open Road Films, on Thursday. He claims that Christian Grey will be written as “shady” and “a really bad lover.” Additionally, Wayans himself will play the Christian Grey spoof character. He has yet to cast a female lead – the parody version of the trilogy’s narrator, Anastasia Steele.
One change you can expect Wayans to make? James’ infamous “red room of pain.” Red gives Grey too much credit, Wayans thinks. He’ll choose an “ugly, random color” instead. We can’t wait!
