Jemima Kirke, one of the stars of HBO’s hit show “Girls” released two PSA’s for the Center for Reproductive Rights earlier today. The star, who says she wants to help speak out for women’s reproductive rights revealed that while she was in college she terminated a pregnancy. She says the bills for the procedure became so high that she had to sacrifice anesthesia in order to be able to afford it.
In a recent interview Kirke stated “We think we do have free choice and we are able to do whatever we want, but then there are these little hoops we have to jump through… I’ve always felt that reproductive issues should be something that women especially should be able to talk about freely, especially amongst each other. I still see that today — I still see shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies; getting pregnant. I still see it. I’ve always been open about my stories, always shared them, especially with other women.” The actress went on to say “I’m already anticipating their issues with self-esteem, their issues with their body…The luggage that comes with being a woman. I would love if, when they’re older and they’re in their teens or their twenties, that the political issues surrounding their body were not there anymore. That they have one less thing to battle around their bodies. Because they’ll always be there, and their own criticisms and their own battles will be there, but I would hate to see them having to fight for rights over their bodies as well.”
