A source has reported that Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., was picked to play the ex-gangster rapper in the biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
The N.W.A. film will be directed by F. Gary Gray, who also directed The Italian Job, starring Mark Wahlberg. Ice Cube, who just had recent success in the movie Ride Along, described the upcoming film as “a dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope- dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, LAPD, rap feuds, FBI, PMRC, [and] the parental advisory stickers….all of it.”
Ice Cube and Gray, who both have had many accomplishments in the industry, didn’t want just anybody for the part. Ice Cube wanted to make sure that his son was the right one for the role, and not choose him because they were family.
In February, when he first admitted that he wanted O’Shea, (who looks just like Cube,) to play him, he said, “I’ve been trying to get that pushed along. Just wanna make sure that he’s the best man for the job.” Before deciding on his son, Ice Cube auditioned all types of actors…and even some rappers tried out for the part. It has also been said that Eazy-E’s son wanted to audition to play his own father, who passed away from AIDS in 2005.
Universal did not officially announce or greenlight the project yet, but Ice Cube, who will be producing along with Dr. Dre and Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods-Wright, will also have casting approval.
Do you think O’Shea will be a good fit to play Ice Cube in the new movie?
