Who knew that women were making so much less than men in the Hollywood film industry? Well apparently only the executives until Sony’s emails were hacked and their dirty secret was out for all to see. The emails unveiled just how much less, significantly less, Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence was getting paid compared to her male co-stars in the movie American Hustle.
Lawrence had an enlightened response when she saw the emails, which she expressed in an essay she wrote for Lenny Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner’s e-newsletter.
“I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up to early.” Lawrence continues, ‘’But if I’m honest with myself, I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight.” As Lawrence claims women not asserting themselves through fear of not being liked is a real problem especially when it’s detracting from their livelihood not to mention their value. Lawrence adds that she believes women are socially conditioned to not be aggressive otherwise they’re depicted as ‘’difficult” or ‘’spoiled,” which is an unfortunate truth.
Lawrence is far from alone in her opinion about gender pay gap, Emma Watson founded a campaign promoting equality in the workplace called #HeForShe, Patricia Arquette spoke about it candidly at the Oscars back in February and Gwyneth Paltrow highlighted her concerns in a recent interview with Variety.
With so many women in Hollywood speaking up about gender pay inequality there could be a shift in progress, after all there is safety in numbers.
