Joan Rivers made a “joke” the way she does about two women held and abused in a Cleveland basement for a decade, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. Rivers is known for taking things a bit too far in her comedy, often offending a number of people.
The attorneys of the two women are demanding an apology from rivers who compared the basement they were held in to her daughter’s guest bedroom. Rivers and her daughter were promoting their new reality show on NBC’s Today Show when she made the comment.
As she complained about her living arrangements in her daughter’s house she said, “those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.” The problem was that she dismissed the suffering they endured for ten years and reduced it to an issue of how much space she has in comparison to them.
The attorney’s called the statement hurtful and shocking. They have said that the women have had a lot of media attention that has had effects on them but that this is a, “new low” and that Rivers should apologize.
The two women along with a third escaped from the basement last year and their kidnapper, Ariel Castro, hanged himself in prison.
Do you think Rivers should give an apology or was it just a harmless joke?
