The Hot Zone recently reported the firing of Univision host Rodner Figueroa after he stated the first lady Michelle Obama looked like a cast member of Planet Of The Apes. Univision wasted no time in terminating Figueroa. Since being fired, Figueroa has apologized to Mrs.Obama in an open letter, “I would like to explain that my remark was not directed at you, but at the result of an artist’s depiction of you that I found wasn’t accurate. The entire video clip in context corroborates this.”
Figueroa continued, “I feel embarrassed, and I hope you can forgive me, because there is no excuse. As a professional, I hold myself to high standards and there is no justification for someone at my level to make any kind of comment that could be interpreted as offensive or disrespectful to you personally, or to any minority in the times we live. I accept full responsibility for this lack of judgment on my part, but I cannot accept being labeled a racist by Univision, for whom I have worked for 17 years, or to anyone who may have misinterpreted my comments.”
If Rodner is looking for an ally, he does not have to look far! Actress Raven-Symoné appeared on The View as a co-host, where the controversy surrounding Figueroa’s comments were the topic of discussion. Rosie Perez, who is a Latina went on to say that many Latinos are actually racist. “They are very racist. They never want to be in the same group as black people” said Perez.
Perez believed Figueroa’s comment to be racist, but Raven-Symoné, begs to differ. Not sure if she is playing devil’s advocate or if she is actually serious when Symoné stated Not Michelle Obama. Michelle, don’t fire me from this right now, but some people do look like animals. She went on to ask, So can I be mad if someone called me Toucan Sam?
Rosie Perez point may went over Raven-Symoné’s head, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Raven-Symoné seems to agree with African-Americans being compared to Apes, which is a well know racial stigma.
