Fans of erotic trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey seem to know a lot about the characters and universe created by writer, E.L. James, including Christian Grey’s birthday. When is it? You guessed it – June 18. To celebrate the birthday of one of her two major characters, James published a new Fifty Shades book entitled Grey. It’s the same story told in the original trilogy, only this time, Christian Grey is narrating. Before, it was college student Anastasia Steele in that role.
This re-telling from a male perspective isn’t a surprising move by James. Back in 2008, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer was working on a re-telling of her first Twilight novel from the point of view of male romantic lead, Edward Cullen. It was called Midnight Sun. James is obviously a fan of the Twilight series, as the Fifty Shades story was originally fan fiction for Twilight.
Readers are experiencing mixed reactions to the new books, which is a whopping 559 pages long. Some reviewers are hooked, and others think this is the worst James endeavor yet. In British newspaper, The Guardian, critic Jenny Colgan writes that the original story was fantastical, but Grey is real and “creepy beyond belief.”
Jamie Dornan, who portrayed Christian Grey in the film adaptation, tweeted James this morning that he prefers this story, calling the character “more mature” and “quite funny.”
Meanwhile, BuzzFeed writer Scott Bryan has spent the day tweeting the most ridiculously filthy passages from the book. There was one line concerning a ginger root that he wasn’t sure if he should post, but he did. In the aftermath, he tweeted, “This book is the worst.”
