Puerto Rican singer and actress, Roselyn Sanchez, who currently stars as Carmen Luna on Lifetime’s television show, Devious Maids, has announced that she will no longer be co-hosting the Miss USA pageant on July 12.
The star released a statement highlighting Donald Trump’s anti-immigration remarks as her reasoning for bowing out, “I was very excited and proud to have been invited to participate in Miss USA, but as a Latina, that is now inconceivable. Although I am not Mexican, I am Puerto Rican and a proud Latina, and his comments were an insult to our culture. I won’t sponsor anything produced by Donald Trump.”
Donald Trump, who recently gave a speech announcing his candidacy for president, made some highly controversial comments about immigration, “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
“It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably, probably, from the Middle East,” Trump went on to say.
Sanchez was supposed to co-host alongside Chilean actor, Cristian De La Fuenta, who also bowed out of hosting the program after hearing Donald Trump’s speech.
The previously set hosts of the pageant are not the firsts to pull away from association with Donald Trump’s name. Earlier today (Thursday, June 25), Univision announced they would end their contract with Trump and the Miss Universe Organization because of his anti-immigration comments.
Colombian singer, J Balvin, who was set to perform at the Miss USA pageant, also pulled out shortly after Mexican rock band Maná publicly spoke out against Trump’s remarks at a Los Angeles show.
Although Trump’s insulting comments about Latinos were disappointing to hear, it’s good to see the Latino community working together to speak up for each other!
