Shonda Rhimes has officially taken over Thursday nights with her hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. She is at the top of her game and shows no signs of slowing down. Now, Shonda is making headlines for other reason. Recently during an interview, she addressed that some people are unable to separate her race and gender when it comes to her succesful career and she’s tired of it!
Shonda stated that her name is almost always listed next to the title of “the most powerful black female showrunner in Hollywood”, and she doesn’t like it at all: “They wouldn’t say that someone is the most powerful white male showrunner in Hollywood. I find race and gender to be terribly important; they’re terribly important to who I am. But there’s something about the need for everybody else to spend time talking about it … that p***es me off.”
Earlier in September, a New York Times profile fueled controversy when it said How To Get Away With Murder portrayed the image of nothing more than an “angry black woman” among other insulting comments.
Shonda obviously wasn’t happy about it, and took to Titter to voice her opinion on the article: “Wait. I’m angry AND a ROMANCE WRITER?!! I’m going to need to put down the internet and go dance this one out. Because s**t is getting real.”
Other media sources have also questioned her ability to raise a family and focus on her career at the same time, because of her gender. “The question drives me nuts… What does Chuck Lorre say when you ask him about work‑life balance?’ Shonda said, referring to the creator of The Big Bang Theory, who also has a family.
Despite the negative opinions some may have about Shonda, that facts remain that she as well as her hit shows are taking over TV and Hollywood. Grey’s Anatomy still has high ratings and reviews, How To Get Away With Murder opened with record breaking ratings, and Scandal has become every gladiator’s obsession!
So ignore the negativity Shonda, you’re clearly doing just fine.
