New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium hosted the Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday night, but the impressive lineup of artists was overshadowed by the rioting crowds outside of the venue.
The huge Hip-Hop and R&B concert featured artists like Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Kendrick Lamar, and Big Sean.
Reports indicate that the violence erupted when people with and without tickets tried to enter the stadium by illegally climbing over fences and pushing through security.
However, several attendees claimed that the real frustration came from those with legitimate tickets who were still not admitted into the concert even after the main acts had begun.
Apparently, concertgoers were still waiting outside at 9 p.m. when the show began at 6 p.m. due to the extremely slow movement of people through security.
The crowd, which got increasingly agitated as it got later into the evening began pushing through barriers and fighting amongst each other. In addition, videos surfaced Monday morning of people throwing bottles at security.
The violence only led to more violence, as police brought in backup in armored vehicles. They used mace and tear gas to disperse the crowds, which seemed to make the scene even more chaotic.
Apparently there were several arrests, but an official number has not been released.
