Toni Braxton had an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, revealing that she became pregnant by her boyfriend Karl Lewis in 2001.
During that pregnancy, she was in the middle of taking a six-month prescription for Accutane, a prescription acne medication which can cause serious complications in pregnancy.
She admitted in her new memoir “Unbreak My Heart” that she decided to terminate the pregnancy, but she would have done the same thing even if she wasn’t on the medication. She revealed that her decision was based more on the refusal to inconvenience her lifestyle than a fear to harm her unborn child.
She also confessed that she felt guilty about the abortion because of her religious upbringing. She was raised in a home that did not support abortion. Braxton admitted to thinking that her youngest son’s diagnosis with autism was God’s way of punishing her. She wrote, “Is God punishing me for that abortion?” The “Unbreak My Heart” singer also questioned God about her Lupus, thinking it was because of the abortion she had earlier in life.
She is a brave woman for speaking up about something so personal. I think she can help many women in the future by talking about her experience with abortion.
