Tracy Morgan opened up for the first time in a year today, Monday, June 1st, 2015, about the car crash that left his life on the line and ended his friend’s, the comedic James McNair.
The “30 Rock” star spoke to Matt Lauer on the Today Show less than a week after settling a lawsuit against Walmart.
“The case is settled, but the pain is always going to be there for Jimmy Mac,” Morgan said today.
Morgan and his friends were on their way back from a performance when they were rear-ended by a Walmart truck. The comedian suffered a broken leg, severe brain trauma and several broken ribs. McNair was killed in the accident.
“I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe I’m in front of you,” he told Lauer. “I can’t believe I’m just here, and just seeing the tragedy that happened. It touches me.”
Morgan also told Lauer that he doesn’t remember the accident. Instead, he remembers waking up and seeing the faces of his fiancée and son.
“There are times where I have my good day and my bad days, where I forget things,” he said. “There are times where I get the headaches, and the nose bleeds. I won’t even let my lady know because I don’t want her to be worried about it.”
The comedian watched videos of the crash and of McNair’s funeral two weeks after the collision everyday on YouTube because he did not feel the full impact of the tragedy, and that was his way of paying his respects to McNair.
“He was a close friend of mine, a comrade in comedy. He was a loving man, and he was a warm man. He was a good man. It’s just hard for me to see that he’s gone.”
Walmart took full responsibility for the collision, and Morgan will soon return to the comedic scene after fully recovering.
“I love comedy. I’ll never stop loving her. I love comedy and I can’t wait to get back to her, but right now my goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet, I’m not,” he said. “And when I’m there, you’ll know it. I’ll get back to making you laugh. I promise you.”
