WNBA star Brittney Griner was involved in a knife attack in China yesterday.
The Phoenix Mercury center was walking with two of her teammates from the practice arena to the team bus when a man appeared with a knife. The assailant was yelling and swinging the knife wildly at them. The knife did pierced into the winter coat Griner was wearing but she only received a small cut. She didn’t received no stitches.
Griner says that the group of players was trapped on the bus for approximately five minutes before the man apparently voluntarily exited the vehicle. The man returned minutes later covered in blood and was apprehended by the Chinese authorities.
Griner said she was fortunate to be OK.
Griner, who led Baylor to a 40-0 season and the 2012 NCAA title, was the No. 1 pick by the Mercury in the 2013 draft. She also led the U.S. to a gold medal last month at the FIBA world championship. She is currently playing for the Chinese women’s basketball team, the Beijing Great Wall.
