Shane Dawson, the YouTube comedian and superstar, came out as bisexual in an emotional video on Tuesday.
Since he started posting YouTube videos in 2008, his channel has gained over 6 million subscribers and his videos have a total view count of over one billion.
That probably makes him the biggest LGBTQ+ personality on the site, so the potential impact of this video is incredibly significant.
As Tyler Oakley wrote on Twitter, “bi-erasure is an issue in the LGBTQ+ community & visibility saves lives.” The fellow YouTube sensation and LGBTQ+ personality congratulated Dawson on “sharing his truth,” and we could not agree more!
Dawson explains in his video that there are a lot of YouTubers who have come out as gay or lesbian, but not as many have spoken about falling somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. He describes how this caused him to feel badly that his sexuality did not fit neatly into a category, and he thought that others might share the sentiment.
Sexuality is, after all, a spectrum.
Dawson goes into depth about this concept, revealing that he learned about it from his therapist.
He told viewers that if they don’t know what label to give themselves, it’s perfectly okay. “Just live your life,” Dawson says.
The 26-year-old’s video has already gained more than 1.5 million views in the first 24 hours and countless fans have been offering him support.
Dawson states at the beginning of his video, “I am Bisexual. I have said it out loud once before, in therapy, and I have never really talked about it until now, publically.”
However, he hopes that by sharing his experience and his truth with the online community, he can help others who may feel the same way.
