In 2014, the Sleeping Beauty with a twist Disney film, Maleficent, was huge. If you want to get specific, the movie cost about $180 million to make and grossed $760 million around the world. That’s definite cause for a sequel, which Disney is leaning toward. Apparently, Linda Woolverton is slated to write the sequel’s screenplay, and the studio is keeping Angelina Jolie, star of the first film, in the loop. It just wouldn’t be a Maleficent sequel without her.
But in honor of this humming news, we want to make a list of five, villain spinoffs that Disney should really consider now that they see how beloved Maleficent was. Take a look!
A film about Alice in Wonderland villain, the Queen of Hearts. Growing up, the Queen was a quiet girl whose heart was broken by a baker’s son, a la The Hunger Games, but everyone will just ignore those similarities. After her heart was broken, she married the King of Hearts, who’s a lot meaner than you would have thought. Now, the Queen has to decide how red she really wants those roses. No, seriously. She befriends the famous, talking cards, and that is what this movie would be about.
Ideal Casting: Helena Bonham Carter reprising her role from 2010’s Alice in Wonderland
The story of evil Mother Gothel from Tangled, the Rapunzel story. Growing up, she was the quirky girl with homemade, flashy clothes, and everyone thought she was a freak. After awhile, the teasing got to her, and she turned cold, hard, and mean. She finds her redemption when she meets Rapunzel, a princess with magical, long hair.
Ideal Casting: Zooey Deschanel. Nobody plays quirky like she does.
Based on iconic, 101 Dalmatians villain, Cruella de Vil. This film would show young Cruella finding out she was allergic to dogs when the one thing she wanted more than anything was a little Dalmatian. Of course, this forces her into a life of depressive evil, and her only source of light is in pudgy Dalmatian, Rolly. The film would feature a pretty sick cover of “Cruella de Vil” by Panic! At the Disco, of course.
Ideal Casting: Nicole Kidman
Apparently, Disney announced a spinoff for Cruella in 2013, but this is just our take on it.
A live-action film that follows Hades, god of the Underworld from 1997 film, Hercules. He’s sassy, but he’s not redeemable. Because no matter how hard you try, you cannot redeem the god of the Underworld. Maybe one day, we’ll live in a world where that’s possible.
Ideal Casting: Alan Cumming
The half-woman, half-octopus terrorizes the rest of the ocean because she’s really insecure about her octopus body. Ariel, a feisty mermaid, teaches her to embrace herself and, of course, not be evil.
Ideal Casting: Queen Latifah
