Melissa McCarthy (known for tons of things, but especially Gilmore Girls, Mike and Molly, and her Oscar nominated performance in Bridesmaids) recently spoke on Ellen about a critic’s sexist comment about her in her 2014 film, Tammy. The 44-year-old actor summarized the comment, reporting that he stated she is only talented when she “looks attractive.” According to McCarthy, the critic also claimed that the Academy Award nominated performer should never let her husband, Ben Falcone, direct her because he allowed her to look unattractive. This raises a pretty obvious question – would this critic have alleged the same things about a male actor in McCarthy’s position?

Like the talent she is, McCarthy responded to the critic (who is male) with grace. She told Ellen that she asked the critic if he would think it justified for his own daughter not to get a job because she did not look attractive. Of course, the critic opposed the suggestion. McCarthy reminded him that all women deserve the same equality and respect as his daughter. That’s a win for all women and definitely for McCarthy.

You can catch McCarthy on Mike and Molly, airing new episodes on CBS this fall. For now, check out the clip of her discussion with Ellen DeGeneres.
