I’m the kind of person who is always dancing. Whether I’m in the store, at a restaurant, at a party or even in my own kitchen…I am probably dancing. So, as you can imagine, music that complements that tendency makes me so happy!
If you’re like me, and love sassy girl-power music that you can jam to, then you need to check out Arí Nicole.
I was lucky enough to get to chat with the artist a bit, and when she described her sound as “urban party pop, or urban pop dance music,” I knew that this would be a fun interview for me.
Let me start with a little bit of background. Arí Nicole is a New York based singer who has been passionate about music since she was in diapers.
I mean that literally! When I asked how she got into music, she told me, “I always loved how [music] felt. I remember…when I was small I used to sing in the house and play on the guitar, I was in school plays singing and in the choir, so it was definitely a large part of my life. My dad even has a video of me and I was probably about a year old maybe? I was in my diaper and I was dancing around to Janet Jackson!” Aw!
However, even though music has “definitely been a large part of [her] life” since she was a little girl, Arí decided to pursue music as a career only two years ago! She said that the epiphany occurred during a vocal lesson. When she described the moment, she explained, “I just realized… that I felt so free! That might sound strange, but it was like stress was relieved while I was singing and I realized that, you know, if you’re going to do a job, if you’re going to do a career, you want to do something that makes you feel good…something you love! So, I decided, that [music] was my passion and I was going to run with it.”
You go, girl!
As I previously mentioned, Arí describes her music as blending “pop and dance and even R&B in a fun way.” She clarifies (much to my excitement), that her music is “Something you definitely want to party to!”
Check out her single “Runaway,” below, to see what she means!
It’s catchy, right? You’ve probably already caught yourself singing the loop “Broken heart can’t keep me down!”
It’s really impressive how Arí integrates her musical influences into her own music. She listed several modern names in that category of ‘influences,’ like, “Janet [Jackson], the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, and Mýa, Toni Braxton, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill…Outkast and Ludacris.” Plus, she included some older artists that her dad would listen to, including, “Sade and Prince, and even Donny Hathaway.”
However, she doesn’t try to just mimic their sounds, instead, she told me how “all of that has influenced my music and the emotion that I want to make sure I can convey, or you know, the messages, or how to convey the messages.” So whether she is writing a song that’s “fun and just upbeat, or just very emotional and heartfelt,” the “Runaway” singer is always thinking about the idea she wants to express!
While the conversation was on this more serious note, Arí explained why she loved the recording process so much (and it was amazing).
The singer began, “I actually love recording just because it’s a creative process for me, I can just zone in and I can actually visualize my storyline. I start off with the song that I wrote and I can actually get into it and actually be a part of it… it’s art that you’re creating. And I feel like that’s so crazy to me; it’s very exciting.”
So, you might be thinking then, well where do these storylines come from? Don’t worry, I was thinking the same thing! Arí explained that, “The inspiration probably comes from past experiences, or present experiences,” plus “Certain fantasies and things like that, that I want to be able to live out!”
If you think that’s cool, check out her new single “Ya Know!” She told me all about the upcoming music video for the single, which she just finished shooting in L.A.! She excitedly recalled how the shoot “was on a beach, in front of an entire audience…it was a lot of fun with good energy. I got to meet a lot of new supporters actually; I got to some new ears!” Have a listen:
So, I think it’s safe to say that Arí Nicole is doing some big things right now in her music career and five years from now, we know she’ll be doing even more! When I asked about her future, she said, “I definitely want to have a few albums out, that way I can grow my fanbase. I want to have completed a major tour with some of my favorite artists, you know, some of the artists that I admire.”
Plus, she wants to branch out into other industries like fashion and video production! She plans to do it all, and we are so excited to watch her grow!

1. What is your favorite song of this summer?
B*tch Better Have my Money by Rihanna! Every time I hear that song, my gangster comes out a little bit!
2. Who is your dream collaboration?
I have a few, actually! [I would] Definitely [do] something with Ludacris, just because I’ve grown up listening to him and I’ve really loved his style. [Plus] Timbaland and Lil Wayne or Drake, Kayne West, there’s Trey Songz…even one of the cool artists right now, Luke James. I love his voice… I would absolutely love to have a collaboration with him!
3. What is your favorite thing to do/favorite place to go in N.Y.C.?
It’s probably the INK 48 rooftop bar…It’s so gorgeous and peaceful. I would also say this diner on 42nd and 11th; it has the most delicious food! Eating is definitely one of my favorite pastimes for sure, so I love to go there. The last place is the Bitter End. I actually saw Olamide there; he is a fantastic new artist out right now. I like to go see his shows there at the Bitter End; it’s a great spot to go to.
4. What are some of your hobbies (besides music)?
Eating is one of my hobbies! [laughs] I love breakfast food, that’s for sure. I [also] dance. I’ve danced from when I was two or three all the way into my late teens. My mom was a choreographer, so that’s how I got into it. I love to bake, so cookies, muffins, cakes, pies…that’s definitely one of my favorite things. I love Netflix and watching movies and going to the movies. I would say Bob’s Burgers is probably my favorite thing to watch on Netflix. I would also say doing some actual editing, like video editing. When I first started YouTube I would edit some of my videos and I really enjoyed that. Even social media editing, just stuff like that.
5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
I would say…it’s actually from my dad. He always told me to stop trying to please everybody, because you’re only stuck disappointing yourself. So, you know, for my music, it really helps because I would think about, ‘what would people want to hear, what do they want me to say.’ Whereas if I kept it from the heart and said exactly what I wanted to say…people would receive it! Do it the way I want to do it, don’t worry about what’s going on, who likes what, so it was a great piece of advice and it’s something that I still do to this day.
