When you think “designer bag” I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is a picture of the classic vintage, gold chain strap Chanel flap bag. I’ve wanted one from the time I was ten years old, but there are other designer purses for us to drool over, some of which I predict might just become the next classics.
Just a year ago it seemed as if very few knew about Céline, a French brand that produces fine leather bags (with a fine leather price tag). The luggage tote is absolutely breathtaking. Just a quick glance and you can automatically tell it’s a product of high fashion, even if you have never seen it before. Numerous versions of the same bag exist in so many different color variations. Some are one tone, and others are color blocked with outrageous color combinations such as blue, and yellow or a simpler combination like black and dark green. Definitely something to keep your eye out for.
Classic quilted Lady Dior in leather or patent leather, this beauty can be used any time and all the time. It has a very versatile look and can be used in the day or night. The dangling letters that spell out D-I-O-R are a staple of this bag and others from the French fashion powerhouse. Dior has been around for over 60 years, and I think the style of this bag, in all its simplicity, will be around for just as long.
This Balenciaga Giant City Bag is exactly everything the brand, and head designer Alexander Wang, represent. It’s edgy, it’s fun, it’s colorful and it’s fashionable. There are many versions of the basic style of this bag within the brand. The hardware that decorates the bottom corners, handles and zipper add a distinct label to it. It comes in many more colors and sizes, but the classic hardware will remain the same. I recently received one as a gift for my past birthday and nothing makes me happier than carrying around a bag that I love, that is durable and that I’ll have for the rest of my life.
Moving into some smaller, evening bags here we have the Saint-Laurent Classic Monogramme Tassel Satchel. Formerly Yves Saint Laurent, the brand uses it’s well known YSL logo on the front with a gold (or silver depending on the color of the bag) tassel down the front. The long chain makes it beautiful to use for any occasion. I personally prefer the simpler colors for this bag, like black and cream, rather than a bright red (which they also carry).
Last, but certainly not least is the Alexander McQueen Knucklebox Clutch. The picture is just one of many beautifully detailed designs from Sarah Burton, the head designer of the brand. There are clutches with beading, studs, spikes, anything you can name and I’m sure it has been on one of these. The unique and unmatchable thing about these, is the knuckle ring aspect at the top. To hold the bag you slip your fingers through and you now have an accessory, not only to carry in your hands, but on your hands. Each bold design is so mesmerizing that I forget it’s not a piece of artwork in a museum. The distinctiveness of the design makes me almost positive that it has potential to become a classic.
All these bags may be out of your reach (I know they’re out of mine), but if you need an excuse to splurge one day along the line, here it is: each of these bags are so well crafted that there is no doubt that they will last you years and years to come. And who doesn’t want to receive compliments every year for the rest of their life?
