The Outside Lands Music Festival finished up in San Francisco on Sunday, with fantastic performances from Elton John and Sam Smith. However, as we look back on the weekend of music, it’s actually some of the smaller names that caught our attention!
So, here are six artists that we think you should definitely check out, as inspired by their sets from Outside Lands 2015! Whether you want romantic ballads or funky dance tracks, this list definitely spans across multiple genres!
SZA, also known as Solana Rowe, has a beautiful, crooning voice, but uses it with some heavy beats and interesting production. She is clearly R&B influenced, but we’re not sure if she can accurately be placed into one genre. Regardless, we fell in love with her, and the rest of the crowds seemed impressed as well.
Song to check out: Her most popular track on YouTube, “Babylon,” is a great tune.
2. Laura Marling
We absolutely love her voice. In addition to being blown away by her beautiful and unique vocal quality, her insightful lyrics help her stand apart from other artists. If we’re being honest, her live show is not particularly flashy, but we’d like to think that she makes up for it in heart. Singer-songwriter fans need to give her a listen.
Song to check out: “Take the Night Off” from her album Once I was an Eagle
3. Ryn Weaver
You may have heard of Ryn Weaver already, as her song “Octahate” has latched itself to the top of the iTunes charts, but we know that she will have many more hits in the near future. Her fan base will probably increase steadily if she does more live performances, because, trust us, her stage presence is huge (and her voice is even more impressive)!
Song to check out: “The Fool” from her upcoming album of the same title
4. Django Django
This British quartet proved to be great live performers. Their set delivered some pretty cool harmonies and their songs were musically interesting due to their creative use of percussion; Think about it as chilled out rock and roll with an artsy twist.
Song to check out: “Shake and Tremble”
5. Robert DeLong
We’d describe Robert DeLong’s sound as dance music with an electronic, alternative twist. It’s fair to say that his music is a bit weird, but it is so much fun!
Song to check out: His popular song “Global Concepts” is a good example of his sound at its best
We had to include at least one San Francisco native in here, and HEARTWATCH
definitely earned its spot. It is an Indie band with pop vibes, and its songs have some super catchy hooks. Bottom line: We loved them.
Song to check out: “Sleepless;” it takes us back to a simpler time.
