The top two women’s soccer teams in the world are facing off on Tuesday for a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final match.
Team USA, ranked second to Germany, the opposing team in Tuesday’s upcoming match, is feeling confident after its 1-0 victory over China in the round of 16.
Following a few clumsy games that seemed anything but coordinated and in-control, the USA really stepped up for its match against China. The majority of the first half was spent on China’s side of the field as the USA played more aggressively than it has in any other match of this World Cup.
Plus, Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday return for the match against Germany after sitting out the match against China due to yellow card accumulation, and the USA’s unbeatable goalie Hope Solo has only let in one goal over the course of the tournament. That’s seven hours of play without letting in a goal!
Things are looking good for the USA when it comes to morale.
However, let’s not sell Germany short. After playing a particularly rough game against France in the previous round, Germany is still the team that’s ranked number one in the world (breaking the USA’s seven-year streak with that title). The match against France ended in penalty kicks, which decided the game in Germany’s favor.
Germany won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007 and it has two of the best attackers in the 2015 tournament so far: Anja Mittag and Celia Sasic.
Germany is actually known for having players in midfield and defense go for some attacks as well, but considering how dangerous this tactic was in the match with France, Germany might need to maintain its defense a little bit better to keep the USA out.
In reality, the USA is entering the semifinal as the underdog against Germany, so many are predicting an extremely close match with Germany ultimately claiming the victory. However, we think that it’s anyone’s game, as the USA has only improved its performance in the last two games. If that momentum continues, and if Rapinoe and Holiday can come back strong, the USA has a fair chance.
