Leela James is living a singer’s dream, although that’s par for the course after grinding for nearly a decade in her craft.
The 31-year-old released her fourth studio album last year, Fall For You, featuring collaborations with Anthony Hamilton and Joe Ryan. She’s also currently on tour, where she and Raheem DeVaughn have been opening for a soul legend in her own right, the one and only Ledisi.
Considering the serious vocal power these women wield, there’s no doubt the duo have been bringing down the house during every show!
Leela recently took time out of her busy touring schedule to chat with The Hot Zone.
You’re on the Intimate Truth tour with Ledisi at the moment. Tell me what that’s been like.
It’s been great! Our shows have been selling out. She’s really wonderful, we have great camaraderie on tour.
What do you like most about touring in general?
Mostly, for me, I enjoy connecting with fans and the people that come out to the shows. They really get a chance to know you and your music even more.
You did a song with Anthony Hamilton, “Say That.” What was it like working with him?
It was great. He’s a great artist and it was very easy.
Who would you want to collaborate with next?
I’m a big fan of Prince.
Tell me about the new single.
We just released a new single, called “Set Me Free.” It’s on my current album, Fall For You.
What was the idea behind that song?
It’s pretty much saying set me free from being in a relationship that’s not really going anywhere, and both parties know it. If you love me, set me free.
Who’s inspiring you right now, either old-school or contemporary?
I’m really into old-school. I’m a big fan of D’Angelo, his music is timeless. Never gets old.
Hot Zoners, check out a live performance of “Set Me Free” from the tour below:
