Just before 3am this morning, there was a giant crash and grinding noise that rang through Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. A train derailed from the tracks and actually went up the escalators on the platform.
Luckily, no one was on the escalator at the time and most of those injured were on the train cars. Thirty people were taken to 3 hospitals and treated for cuts, bruising, and strains. Security and law enforcement are working to uncover the reason for the accident by reviewing security footage and interviewing the driver.
It seems as though the train was going much faster than it should have been and did not halt at the bumping post – a shock absorber put at the end of the tracks to help a train to stop. Reports from other employees said that the train didn’t slow at all as it came to the stop and called it, “chaos.”
O’Hare is the fifth largest airport in the world with about 66 million passengers passing through it each year. Thankfully, none were seriously injured.
