A black family reportedly received an anonymous note urging them to leave town in what seems to be a hate crime in Lindenhurst, New York. The neighborhood is approximately populated by 84% of white people, and that is why the letter reads “YOU DON’T BELONG HERE!!!”

Ronica Copes is the woman who had received the letter on Thursday, May 21, 2015. She shared her surprise and a picture of the inexcusable letter on Facebook, which instantly gained attention on social media. Copes wrote, Sooooo, I’m checking my mail and when I come across this I can’t help but laugh…wait, it’s not funny though. Where they do that at? Oh yeah Lindenhurst. Unbelievable but then it’s not…our daily reality, I’ve just never seen it in this form.”

Elected Officials from the Town of Babylon and the Village of Lindenhurst have issued the following statement:

“We strongly condemn this hateful letter and are working closely with the Suffolk County Police and our Anti-Bias Task Force to investigate this incident. The best way to fight bias is with solidarity and we stand with all of our residents in declaring that there is no place for this type of intolerance and hatred in the Village of Lindenhurst, the Town of Babylon, or anywhere in our community. We are, and always will be, a strong diverse community that does not cede ground to hostility, ignorance, or hatred, wherever it may appear.”

The sender of this letter is listed as “Lindenhurst Community.” Copes informed the Suffolk County Police Department, and a hate crime investigator visited her home this past Friday, May 22, 2015, to further explore the extent of the crime.

We are wishing Copes’ family a safe and just investigation.
