A woman has been taken into federal custody after throwing a shoe at Hillary Clinton as she began a Las Vegas convention keynote speech yesterday. Yes, you read that correctly, a shoe.
The incident happened just moments after she took the stage before an Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries meeting at the Mandalay Bay resort.
She dodged the object, and even joked about it.
“Is that somebody throwing something at me? Is that part of Cirque de Soleil?” Clinton asked.
She also added, “My goodness, I didn’t know that solid waste management was so controversial. Thank goodness she didn’t play softball like I did.”
Mark Carpenter, a spokesperson for the recycling institute, stated that the woman wasn’t affiliated with the organization nor credentialed for the event.
“Our staff denied her access before she later rushed past security,” Carpenter said in a statement. “An ISRI staffer then stopped her as she approached the stage. She was then handed over to law enforcement.”
Brian Spellacy, U.S. Secret Service supervisory special agent in Las Vegas, said that a black and orange shoe had been recovered from the stage.
The incident brought back memories of former President George Bush dodging two shoes thrown by an Iraqi journalist during a news conference in Baghdad in 2008.
Clinton had been going across the country “giving paid speeches to industry organizations and appearing before key Democratic Party constituents.”
