The Orioles haven’t done something since 1997. Win the American League East. It only took them 17 years to win it.
Against all odds, the Orioles have clinched the American League East with a 8-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays last night. This marks the first division title since 1997. During that year they went to the American League Championship Series but lost to the Cleveland Indians in six games.
The Orioles who basically led the American League East for most of the season, clinched the division title in their 151st game, earliest amount of games they clinched since 1971. Orioles General Manager Dan Duquette says the “Orioles have a lot of work to do and this is not the end of the road.”
The Orioles look forward to the playoffs where they will meet the American League Central Champions Detroit Tigers or the Kansas City Royals. They hope to play deep into October with the eyes on the prize.
Good luck to them.
