Can you picture a normal work week being three days instead of five? I’m sure you can. That’s majority of the “9 to 5″working class’ dream. Well Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world, has the same vision. He believes that life would be better with a 3-day work week!
Now before you say “well what does a rich man know about working hard every day just to get by” remember, there’s a reason why the Mexican telecom tycoon is worth over $80 billion. That doesn’t just happen, without hard work and dedication (unless of course you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth). Slim told CNN Money “You should have more time for you during all of your life not when you’re 65 and retired.”
Imagine living the American dream and actually enjoying the fruits of your labor, before checking in to a retirement home. Sounds good doesn’t it? Well as always when something is sounds too good to be true it usually is. There’s a catch 22 in Slim’s plan. If people work 3-days, that means longer hours and retiring much later in life. He suggested 11-hour shifts and pushing the retirement age to 75. Puts a damper on the dream doesn’t it?
He also believes the change would give younger workers more opportunity to enter the workforce and improve the economy and financial markets.
“I am sure it will happen. Machines should work 24 hours and services should work as much as possible. It’s a society of knowledge and experience. You have better experience and knowledge when you are 60, 65 and 70.”
What do you think of Slim’s plan hotzoner? Do you like the idea of the change or would you rather stick with the “9 to 5”, 5-days a week work schedule?
