Cortana is Microsoft’s new baby that will be rivaling Apple’s Siri and Google Now. The system that will talk to you and function as your own personal assistant within your Microsoft phone update 8.1, is expected to make a splash. It has some of the same features as the others but has a unique personality with the ability to store data and information in a Notebook like system.
Like Siri, users can tell Cortana how they would like to be addressed, but can also pick up on personal information, location, reminders and even behaviors. Have a flight you’re getting on in a few hours? You can track flight information and have Cortana send you notifications about any changes.
The new system can also learn more about users and store it in its personal Notebook to really get to know the person who owns the phone. It’s a bit creepy and a little reminiscent of Spike Jonze’s Her but it all seems very cool.
For some reason I’m thinking of this whole Cortana, Siri, Google Now competition arising as a scene from Mean Girls. “Cortana, you can’t sit with us!” It’s a much more interesting way to picture it. We’ll find out if Cortana can “sit with us” during the Build conference when all will be unveiled.
