July 18 is Nelson Mandela Day and his birthday.

Mandela, the former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, died at the age of 95 on Dec. 5, 2013. This is the first time the day has been celebrated since his death.

Nelson Mandela Day is an international holiday which was unanimously approved in 2009 by the U.N. General Assembly. It’s intended to honor Mandela’s legacy and encourage people to volunteer and perform community service. According to a statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation Initiative “It was created to honor Mandela and inspire others to carry on his efforts to “take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time”.

To mark the day, Google created a doodle collecting some of his best known quotes along with beautiful animations charting Mandela’s life.

Today would have been Mandela’s 96th birthday.
