Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that New York City public schools will now recognize two of Islam’s biggest holidays – Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.

De Blasio stated “It was just a matter of fairness, it’s as simple as that”. Approximately 10 percent of the city’s student population is Muslim. In 2008 The City Council attempted to add Muslim holidays to the school calendar but it was vetoed by the former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
