It has been a trend for a few years now to ask your favorite celebrity to prom or a military ball and rely on the sheer power of the Internet to gain popularity and hope that they see it (and, of course, say yes).

This high school student did not need the Internet. Miss America, Nina Davuluri, was standing right in front of eighteen-year-old Patrick Farves in his high school. Miss America was at Central York High School to talk about the importance of math, science and engineering as well as diversity when Farves asked.

The floor was open for questions and the senior stood up, asked her to go to prom with him and then walked to the stage with a plastic flower. She laughed and the students cheered. The administration was not as happy.

School officials heard about his plan beforehand and warned him not to do it. He did it anyway and received three days of in-school suspension because of it. The officials say that students are disciplined for breaking rules they set and this case is no different.

Farves has since apologized for disrupting the event.
