LeBron James will in fact be a free agent this Wednesday, but relax Cavs fans – don’t go starting bonfires with his jersey! The King is not taking his talents to anywhere but Cleveland.
Firstly, it would be absurd to leave a team he just led to the NBA finals, not to mention a team he just returned to after abandoning them once already. His reputation has to mean something, right? Secondly, James is merely making an intelligent business decision. By declining his player option, he is ensuring that he will be able to become a free agent after next season, in which the salary cap will rise significantly and he can opt-in for a much larger contract.
On the other hand, reports do say that James will “wait and see” what the Cavaliers do before resigning. In other words, management needs to keep the current roster together. More specifically – Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. Though rumors circulated that Love might leave to sign with the Lakers, the drama has died down for now, and all signs point to the big man returning for another championship run. Despite losing to the Golden State Warriors, with a healthy Love and Kyrie Irving next season, there is no reason why this team should not return to championship caliber.
Unless there are massive mishaps during the free agency process, we can all expect to see James in a Cavaliers jersey once again next season.
