Roger Federer is the five-time former winner of the Dubai Duty Free Championship. However, he seemed to have a slight struggle gaining victory this time around. He mentions his opponent Radek Stepanek, gave him more of a challenge than expected. Federer stated “Radek did a good job of putting the pressure on me and mixing it up. From that standpoint, it was a really difficult match. I’m very pleased to come through.” Though flattering to Radek this is a prime example of being overconfident. There is no doubt both athletes are extremely skilled in the sport which raises the question” Why would Federer underestimate Radek?” I guess we are all guilty of having that overlap of confidence when consistently winning or gaining praise for a talent/skill. The anxiety of expecting an easy win seemed to effect Federer extremely and he blames the struggle. “I started to understand what I was doing wrong which made me maybe play a little bit tentatively from the baseline, what made me not make enough shots [and] why I wasn’t playing as aggressively as I wanted to”.
Nonetheless after the grueling match, Federer pulled through and received a well deserved win. Federer advanced to the semifinal meeting with Novak Djokovic. He hopes to win the Aviation Club Title for the fifth time. If Federer succeeds this will be his 550th win of his career!
