Saturday night Manny Pacquiao beat Chris Algieri in an emphatic manner, scoring six knockdowns and winning in a unanimous decision at the Venetian Cotai Arena. That was Algieri’s first loss of his career which began in 2008 and Pacquiao made sure it was a loss to remember.
That being said, Floyd Mayweather is also undefeated but he is a much bigger target than Algieri. Mayweather’s record stands at 47-0, and everyone has been begging for Pacquiao to fight Mayweather. After Saturday’s fight against Algieri at the post-fight press conference, Pacquiao talked about the long-awaited fight saying, “For me, the fans deserve to see that fight. People can prepare for it early next year.”
Pacquiao promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum revealed that talks have been happening at CBS, who own Mayweather’s stage on Showtime, as well as HBO which displays Pacquiao’s fight. After the fight on Saturday night, Arum commented, “All the nonsense has to cease. Everybody should be working together to make that fight happen. There’s no excuses anymore, none, so I’ll be at the phone. Manny will be his phone. We’re ready.”
If Mayweather truly wants to prove to everyone that he is the best boxer, then he needs to do it for himself and all supporters of boxing. The fans truly deserve this fight. So if all goes well, you should expect this fight to happen sometime next year. Although Pacquiao and Mayweather are not in their prime anymore, this is still a fight that needs to happen to settle things once and for all.
