Jenny Lewis has enlisted the help of Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson to do a big task: bringing back track suits and stomping all over gender norms.
The four women star in the wonderful new video for Lewis’ Beck-produced single “Just One of the Guys,” set to appear on her upcoming solo album, The Voyager.
Directed by Lewis, the musician first strums out the tune while donning another brilliant rainbow pantsuit while Stewart, Larson and Hathaway ,who was lucky enough to score keytar duties —,back her up with more detached lethargy.
But when the track suits, wigs and faux mustaches come out, all bets are off, with the crew flaunting their overwrought machismo and flying karate kicks.
Hathaway sporting a rat tail that brings just the right amount of levity to Lewis’ poignant, shimmering number about becoming comfortable with yourself and your womanhood with age.
The Voyager marks Lewis’ first solo album in six years and will see release on July 29th via Warner Bros. The record was made during a particular difficult point in Lewis’ life, coming in the wake of Rilo Kiley’s split and the death of her estranged father.
Struck by bouts of intense insomnia, Lewis would write songs to keep herself busy; and last year, following an extensive tour with the Postal Service, she entered the studio with Ryan Adams and his partner Mike Viola.
