WNBA superstar Becky Hammon, is in her last season of her illustrious 16 year career as a player for the San Antonio Stars. As she now has a new career to look forward to…
The San Antonio Spurs hired Hammon as an assistant coach on Tuesday, making her the first full-time, paid female coach on an NBA coaching staff.
This news is certainly ground breaking for the league as well as all female basketball enthusiasts. I mean it’s about time…considering we have male coaches in the WNBA. It’s nice to see a woman get the opportunity to draw up some x’s and o’s on the sideline in the men’s game as well.
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had this to say Tuesday in a statement,
“Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball I.Q., work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs,”
Coach Pop, as he’s known as league wide, made it very clear this was strictly a business decision in relations to her basketball knowledge. Not some publicity stunt.
Hammon will have to prove herself immediately next season as the Spurs are coming off their 5th championship under Popovich.
