In an Instagram post, Matt Grodsky writes about one of his earliest memories; he writes that he remembers “being 3 years old and standing up in front of my pre-school class, declaring that I would marry her someday.”
The her is Laura Scheel who, you guessed it, is now his wife.
According to the story, posted by the Instagram account “The Way We Met,” Laura taught him how to “ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese.” He talks about playing hide-and-seek with her and staying up when the rest of the class was napping.
In true long-term love story fashion, they lost touch briefly. In elementary school they were no longer together, no longer best friends and only saw each other, according to Matt, through their family’s Christmas cards each year. Then, in high school, a mutual friend brought them back together and they were dating within two weeks. Despite attending different high schools and different colleges they stayed together until May 23rd, 2015 when Matt “decided to stay true to” his preschool declaration. He proposed to Laura where it had all begun: their preschool.
Laura remembers a little goofball who she always had fun with. Matt remembers trying to impress her with Lion King quotes (their favorite movie) and by being the one to bust open the pinata their class got for Cinco de Mayo one year.
Despite attending different elementary schools and going into different high schools, one day Laura spotted Matt’s name in a friend’s phone. She said that she was “wary” about dating him, but that when he texted her, everything just clicked.
On the way to propose, Laura wondered why Matt seemed so nervous; she thought they were just going for a picnic to celebrate completing their junior year in college.
He pulled it off, even successfully getting his brother to show up and snap pictures just as he hit his knee and her hands flew to her mouth. One guess what her answer was.
The two were married in December of 2016. You can see pictures of them through the years here.
