Miss Universe Japan Facing Backlash; Not “Japanese Enough”

Japan’s newest Miss Universe, Ariana Miyamoto, was crowned Japan’s newest Miss Universe, but instead of basking in the glory of it all she is facing tons of criticism. Followers on Twitter and other social media websites are commenting that Ariana is not “Japanese enough”. So what does that mean? Although Ariana is a Japanes citizen and speaks the language fluently, her mixed background seems to be a problem. She is the daughter of a Japanese woman and an African-American man from the United States. Here are some of the comments:

“Is it okay to select a hafu to represent Japan?” t”Because this is Miss Universe Japan, don’t you think hafu are a no-no.” “Hafu” is a Japanese term used to refer to someone who is biracial.

Many are already counting down the days until they have a new Miss Universe Japan. TheMiss Universe completion will be held next January.

Throughout it all, Ariana is hopeful that things will turn around and she will remain positive. “The world competition is going to be tough. But I’ll believe in myself and continue doing my best.”
